I’ll Recognise Palestine and Criminalize Islamophobia: Ed Miliband

Written by Shoaib

British people who follow Islam in the UK make up 5% of the population and have served Britain in all spectra of British life. From the Asian Muslims who served in the World Wars to the Caucasian Muslim converts, Muslims have largely integrated into British life.

No doubt extremist elements at the right wing of politics and within the Muslim community attempt to malign such facts. Most reasonable Brits judge the Muslim community by the people they meet at work and their neighbours – but hate speech against Muslims is still allowed.

Russell Brand

The Labour leader stand with 'Labour Friends of Palestine' and said he would support a Palestinian state and criminalize Islamophobia

Ed Miliband stands with ‘Labour Friends of Palestine’

Russell Brand has become one of the most influential people in British politics despite saying that people should not vote as he believed it changes nothing. However when he interviewed Ed Miliband and heard the plans the Labour leader has for the country, Brand changed his view and began encouraging people to vote.

Brand showed he was not arrogant in the face of evidence and was open minded to change but the tabloid media didn’t care and began a smear campaign against him claiming he was a hypocrite. Perhaps because Brand attacked Rupert Murdoch and the same media is owned by Rupert Murdoch – who also does not vote but controls every Prime Minister through his power over the media.

On Palestine

The Labour leader said he supported recognising Palestine as an independent state. He said that such a move would bring stability to the region. He said his party would back any future vote to recognise Palestine just as he did in October when he backed a motion to recognise Palestine.

I will speak out about the [Israeli] settlements. I spoke out about Israel’s incursion into Gaza

Miliband visited the Palestinian Territories last April where he attacked Israeli settlements calling them “a mortal threat to the two-state solution”

It should be noted that Ed Miliband has supported “Labour Friends of Palestine” for a long time. When he addressed the “Labour Friends of Palestine” he recommitted his support for the Palestinian cause describing how he was “proud” to have supported Octobers vote to recognise Palestine.

What I have seen today shows that the expansion of Israeli settlements on the Palestinian West Bank is not only wrong and illegal but represents a mortal threat to the two-state solution and to a successful outcome of the peace process

Islamophobia

Many Muslims feel isolated when we see that while the abhorrent crimes of racism and Anti-Semitism are banned, attacking someone for what they believe is not. In a recent interview Ed Miliband said “We are going to make it an aggravated crime. We are going to make sure it is marked on people’s records with the police to make sure they root out Islamophobia as a hate crime” pledging a “zero-tolerance approach to hate crime”

We are going to change the law on this so we make it absolutely clear of our abhorrence of hate crime and Islamophobia. It will be the first time that the police will record Islamophobic attacks right across the country

After it was reported Muslims face the worst job discrimination compared to any minority group, the Labour leader went on to assert that when he is Prime Minister, Muslims would not be discriminated against in the work place. He then went on to attack the governments Prevent programme which Muslims have grown to mistrust.

I will always engage with people. I really value my relationship with the Muslim community and it is a relationship I would nurture as a Prime Minister

In light of the comments made by the Labour leader and his track record, I belive it would be ludicrous to vote anyone else. Especially after seeing the Conservatives who in their last term came up with laws which have been described as discriminatory to Muslims and recently said that they would shut down Mosques without specifying the details of who would make a Mosque terror list.

With such a crucial election ahead of us, we can not waste our vote. Get out on Thursday and use your vote wisely.
